Hi Helen,
Yes, scary indeed and sadly very true. I was looking at a designers web site the other day and admiring her portfolio. After clicking on some of the clients to check out their sites closer (I was considering some design work) it became quickly apparent that most of her clients were no longer afloat. All of the links were now holding pages for sites that had ceased trading. So, being curious, I looked into a couple of the remaining sites and found that these sites had no SEO AT ALL - and I bet the poor owners had no idea.

There was nothing wrong with the products and there was nothing wrong with the designs but at some point someone needs to point out that there is a crucial bit missing to tie it all in! I don't expect designers to know it all, they design and that's what SEO experts are for but when dealing with people who probably have no idea about SEO, I feel a designer should make them aware that they do the design and then the optimizing is down to the client, but I fear that in some cases the designers don't even realize about SEO themsleves to pass that crucial info on!

Thanks for swinging by and leaving your thoughts Helen :)

I'm being followed on Twitter by so many people who want to teach me about SEO that I had an inkling that many of them were not the experts they claimed to be! But I'm horrified that so many web designers aren't doing even the basics of SEO. Getting a business of the ground is hard enough, without this problem getting in your way.

Nice article - glad I stumbled across your website :0)
